The Alkaline Diet is a diet designed to reduce the acid levels in the body. By eating specific foods that make the body more alkaline, it is claimed to not only help a person lose weight, but also reduce the risks of cancer and arthritis. The diet claims that processed foods, snacks, dairy, eggs, packaged snacks, meat, refined sugar, and wheat, should be avoided. Because, these food types increase the acid levels in the body, which is unhealthy. This diet also encourages the avoidance of alcohol and caffeine.
The Alkaline Diet promotes drinking a lot of water, eating lots of certain vegetables and fruit, soybean, tofu, some legumes, nuts, and seeds. These are all alkaline producing foods. Although, it has not been proven, the alkaline diet claims to help your body maintain its blood pH level. (A pH level measures how alkaline or acid something is. A pH of 14 is completely alkaline, while a pH of 0 is totally acidic. A pH of 7 is neutral.)
Does it work? Drinking lots of water, eating the foods promoted in the diet, are known to be good for you. Avoiding alcohol, sugar, and processed foods are also healthy weight loss suggestions. Early research on eating low acid producing foods, suggests that it could help lower the risk of colon cancer, diabetes type2, kidney stones, and improve brain function and heart health.
